2013 Employee Giving Campaign
Every September, we ask UnityPoint Health - Des Moines employees to give back during our Employee Giving Campaign. All gifts directly support important programs and services at our hospitals, and make a huge impact on our patients and community. Gifts may be made online, and 100% of every single dollar goes to the area designated by employees making a contribution to Methodist, Blank, Lutheran, Methodist West, John Stoddard Cancer Center, Taylor House, the Clinics or the Foundation.
The 2013 theme is inspired by M*A*S*H!
We asked a few employees to share why they G*I*V*E, as well as explain how employee giving dollars benefit their respective departments, such as nurse education, employee crisis fund and simulation education. As of September 11, more than $304,000 has been raised to meet our goal of $725,000.
Chaplain Bob Green
Pastoral Care Director
"When I think about why I give to the employee campaign, I am reminded how much I have spent on frivolous things like fish bait. I have spent a lot of money on fish bait over the years and fed a lot of fish that I did not catch. I spend even more on what I don't need and am reminded how little I would miss many of my purchases. The profound needs of many in our community that our foundation serves, reminds me of the pleasure of giving. I support our CPE students, and I give to programs that benefit the most needy-children."
UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine - 2103 Ingersoll Avenue
"Since I am so fortunate to be part of the UnityPoint family, I wanted to be able to give something back to the community. The area I support is the Child Life program at Blank Children's. The Child Life specialists help take some of the fear and anxiety away from kids who come into the emergency room for stitches or surgery, for example. These specialists meet with the families and kids to educate them on what is happening so they are less fearful. The Child Life department is responsible for the 'fun in the hospital' and has celebrations on various holidays and events for the kids and their families. After raising 3 children, and now as a grandmother of 4, I know how a program like this can make a difference during time spent at the hospital."
Patient/Family Flow Coordinator
IMMC Surgical Services
"I see kids come in for surgery every day and my heart goes out to them. I direct my EGC gifts to Blank Children's Hospital to ensure the best care possible is available to these young lives."
Dr. Amar Nath, M.D.
Iowa Health Cardiology
"I give to the Employee Giving Campaign because I want to help our community get better and offer better care through our organization."
Mary Ann Hilger-Brekke, MS
UnityPoint Health at Home and Taylor House Hospice
"Taylor House Hospice provides patients and their loved ones with the comfort and support they need during their end of life experience. I am privileged to be a part of a dedicated team that addresses physical, emotional and spiritual needs for each unique person and family we serve. In addition, I support United Way. My career has provided the rich opportunity to work with women, teenage parents and their children, and the elderly. I believe that appropriate and comprehensive health care helps parents make sure that their children are born healthy and develop on track."
