The play tells the story of stockbroker, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, both alcoholics, who meet and form a relationship through helping each other remain sober. Together they pioneer Alcoholics Anonymous, a program for alcoholics that still exists today. While often humorous, this story displays the amazing journey Bill W. and Dr. Bob go through, and includes the story of their wives, the founders of Al Anon. As many reviews have said, "This play is not just for AA, it's a play for everyone."
The Powell Chemical Dependency Center is located at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. It is a strong supporter of the AA program because of how destructive alcoholism is and because the program has worked for numerous individuals for over 70 years. Alcoholism can destroy lives and only two to three million, out of the eight million who suffer from the disease, receive treatment each year. Powell CDC is excited to bring the story of AA's origin back to life with this wonderful presentation.
Tickets for public performances are available for in person purchase at the ticket office at the Civic Center or through Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or www.desmoinesperformingarts.org.
