Shive-Hattery won the Grand Place Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Iowa. The first place design prize in the building and systems category was awarded for the sustainable design of the new Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines, Iowa. The new hospital is owned by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines-Des Moines.
Methodist West Hospital is Iowa's newest licensed acute care hospital and is expected to become the cornerstone of the growing medical hub in West Des Moines. The site was chosen and developed to allow plenty of growing room without using natural habitat or prime agriculture land. The hospital, along with its neighbors, Lakeview Medical Park, Lakeview Ambulatory Surgery, the Iowa Clinic and the Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons, is expected to bring more than 1 million people to the area for services and jobs. The economic impact to the community is a boon, and the environmental impact will be minimal thanks to the sustainable design features used throughout the site and facility.
Five members of the primary design team and seven members of the construction team are Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professionals. The team's sustainable design training and proclivity complemented the resolve of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines-Des Moines' administrative leaders to produce a facility that is exceptionally environmentally friendly.
"I believe the work of Shive-Hattery far exceeds the intended uses and expectations of the project, " said Sherrilyn Stewart, Director of Design, Construction and Property Management for UnityPoint Health - Des Moines-Des Moines. "It has been an unbelievable project that exemplifies teamwork and high quality."
