Summer is a time for adventures! In the Wardell family, our adventures look a little different than most. For Dan, June and July are taken up by the IPTV Kids Club Reading Road Trip. So for me and our kids, we are on our own if we want to have any adventures.
We haven't let our Daddy-less summers stop us, though! For the past two summers, my kids and I have gone to Family Camp at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center (LOMC), an incredible 650-acre gem in Illinois where I attended as a child and worked as a counselor during my college summers. In addition to being just all-around awesome, LOMC holds strong memories for me of faith, friendships, adventures, independence and of course, FUN! Since before my oldest was born, I have looked forward to the day I could share with my kids my most precious, treasured places, and I decided the summer of 2012 was the time to start, when my kids were only 4, 2, and 8 months!
I knew it would be super hard to take all three kids to camp on my own, so I enlisted the help of my amazing parents, who are always up for an adventure. For two summers in a row, they have attended Family Camp with us, and the memories we've made will last a lifetime (for all three generations!). This year, my amazing 94-year-old grandmother joined us at camp! We had four generations bonding, adventuring, and growing in faith. SUCH an amazing experience!
This year's camp adventures were a bit easier to experience, since my kids were 5, 3, and 20 months. I carried my youngest in a Kanga the majority of the time, which made life so much easier! On some of our hikes, even my 3-year-old got to ride on Grandpa's back. Grandpa's such a trooper!
We enjoyed hiking, swimming, arts and crafts, tie dying, singing and dancing, devotions, ice cream-making, games, archery, canoeing, campfires, and even s'mores. We came home with tie dyed t-shirts, bird houses made out of gourds, homemade bread, a few bug bites, a whole bunch of photos, and new memories to treasure for a lifetime.
