DES MOINES, Iowa –Blank Children’s Hospital, with financial support from Kohl’s Cares®, is educating kids on healthy food choices through its Kohl’s All Kids Healthy-Childhood Obesity Prevention program.
The problem of childhood obesity is especially alarming for Iowa because 70 percent of middle-age adults in the state are overweight or obese, and 37.5 percent of sampled Iowa third- to fifth-graders are at risk for becoming overweight or are currently overweight. Experts say that today’s youth may be the first generation to have a shorter life span than their parents due to the obesity epidemic.
“Blank Children’s Hospital is a resource for families in Iowa, and we are committed to improving the health of children in our communities,” said Julia Richards Krapfl, Kohl’s All Kids Healthy program coordinator, Blank Children’s Hospital, Center for Advocacy and Outreach. “We’re proud to be able to offer tools to children and families to make healthier life choices. With the support of Kohl’s Cares for Kids, we’re able to broaden the scope of obesity and the health effects it can have on children throughout their lives.”
Since 2006, Kohl’s has donated more than $603,000 to Blank Children’s Hospital. Other initiatives supported through Kohl’s Cares include a school nurse program, conferences, medical supplies and school health education.
Kohl's commitment to Blank Children’s Hospital is made possible through the Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys, with 100 percent of net profit benefiting children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one. Kohl's has raised more than $231 million through this merchandise program. In addition to the merchandise program, Kohl's Cares features the Kohl's Cares® Scholarship Program, which last year recognized more than 2,300 young volunteers with more than $400,000 in scholarships and prizes. Through Kohl’s Associates in Action volunteer program, more than 669,000 associates have donated more than 2.2 million hours of their time since 2001, and Kohl’s has donated more than $63 million to youth-focused nonprofit organizations. Kohl’s also offers fundraising gift cards for schools and youth-serving organizations. For more information, visit www.Kohls.com/Cares.
