What is influenza - known as "the flu"? 

  • Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract. Although the flu affects all age groups, kids tend to get it more often than adults. 

Why get a flu vaccine and when?

Because the flu virus changes constantly, the vaccine is updated yearly and an annual vaccination is recommended. A flu vaccine can be given to anyone 6 months and older - especially those at high risk for complications if they should get the flu.

 

  • Children 6 months to 23 months of age
  • People with chronic health conditions, such as heart, lung, kidney disease; diabetes
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems

Flu season is typically late December through mid-March, it is recommended that individuals start getting vaccinated now to be sure to be protected when flu season arrives.

 

What are the signs and symptoms of influenza?

 

Symptoms of the flu may include:

  • high fever
  • chills
  • dizziness
  • loss of appetite
  • tiredness
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny nose
