How to Cope with Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy, also known as "Chemo", is a common cancer treatment method used by doctors for their patients to help with the following:

  • Destruction of cancerous cells
  • Controlling tumor growth
  • Preventing the spread of cancer
  • Relieving symptoms and pain
  • Preventing reoccurrence of cancer
Chemotherapy was discovered after WWII and has become very effective with the progression of technology. Chemotherapy uses drugs that destroy cancerous cells. Common side effects are lack of energy, achiness, and possible hair loss.

While undergoing chemotherapy, it is important to keep your family and loved ones involved. They can provide support by driving you to and from your sessions. They can also stay and keep you company while you're at the hospital. Sometimes family and friends live far away and can only provide support from a distance. Thankfully, UnityPoint Health - Des Moines offers a number of cancer support groups and educational classes to help ease the battle.

The "Getting Started: Chemotherapy" class is for cancer patients that are beginning or are already underway with receiving chemotherapy treatment. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is taught by an experienced oncology nurse. Participants will learn how to prepare for chemotherapy, and what to expect during and after treatment.
