Congratulations to Danielle Burkhalter of Human Resources for receiving an UnityPoint Health - Des Moines ACE Award. The ACE (Always Committed to Excellence) Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines employees. Below is the nomination letter written for Danielle and an example of the passion she exhibits every day at UnityPoint Health - Des Moines.
Danielle Burkhalter is very passionate about helping people or being a champion on their behalf. She exhibited this passion in her quest to assist a Project Search intern, Jake Powley. Jake interned in Human Resources this spring and is in a motorized wheelchair due to a motorcycle injury that left him paralyzed at age nine. While his chair still got him around, pieces of it were being held together by shoestrings and duct tape.
There were plans in place for Jake to begin working with our Child Advocacy program where he would go to schools and talk to students about safety and how to prevent head and neck injuries. With Jake's new public role, and with his permission, Danielle personally took on the task of researching what it would take to get Jake a new chair. As she began this research, she worked with a bank to set up an account for donations and has received about $2,000 toward the purchase of a new chair.
Part of Danielle's research led her to Denise Behrends in Therapy Services. Through Denise, Danielle found out it may be possible for Jake to get a new chair through insurance after going through an evaluation process of Jake's chair and needs.
While this process has not yet been completed, Jake is in the final months of the evaluation process, and it looks like he may be receiving a new chair. I wanted to recognize and thank Danielle for the respect and compassion she exhibited throughout this process in helping someone down the path of achieving a goal they didn't think they could attain.
Danielle was nominated by Janna Rensch of Human Resources.
