Iowa Health - Des Moines Weight Loss Specialists are now able to measure metabolic rates with the use of REEVUE, a machine that reads each person's metabolism by measuring the oxygen the body consumes. With this measurement, it calculates the patient's Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), or Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). The weight loss specialists are able to screen for abnormally low metabolic rates, teach energy balance and pinpoint the precise caloric intake required for weight loss.
The REEVUE works with the clinic's Healthy Lifestyle Program along with monthly doctor visits. "Typically, as the dietitian, I ask all patients to complete two weeks of a baseline food and activity log and provide the patient with resources to complete the log," said Clinical Dietitian Kelsey Ermels, RD, LD. When patients use the REEVUE indirect calorimeter machine, they are able to get a measurement of their metabolism. After use, each patient is provided with a unique printout to aid teaching. The specialists then compare the REEVUE recommendations to the patient's current intake and set up an eating and exercise plan.
Indications for use include obesity as well as obesity related diseases such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea. Patients are able to be re-tested as often as every three months.
