Mission
To improve the quality of the lives of individuals and families by teaching recovery skills, supporting healthy lifestyles and reawakening the spirit.
Quality through experience
Treatment and recovery can begin at Powell CDC. Since opening in 1973, Powell CDC has served over 30,000 patients and their family members. We know that sensitive issues surround the use of chemicals and privacy is important to recovery. We take pride in providing confidential services. Chemical dependency is a treatable illness.
Powell CDC, located on the Iowa Lutheran campus, is a safe and supportive setting where individuals can face their drug use and learn to make healthy choices. Powell CDC allows individuals to work with their families and significant others to rebuild lives impacted by the uncertainty, pain, loss, helplessness and fear created by drug abuse.

Services Offered
- Evaluation and Assessment
Individuals may call to schedule a session to evaluate the seriousness of their substance abuse.
- Detoxification
Detoxification takes place with strict medical supervision in a hospital setting.
- Treatment
Several treatment levels are offered; inpatient care in a hospital or residential setting, day treatment, evening outpatient or relapse specified outpatient. Patients move from one level of care to another, based on their clinical need. All treatment is provided by a skilled interdisciplinary staff team.
- Family Program
Powell CDC provides a treatment program for concerned persons who have been negatively affected by addiction. By understanding chemical dependency and receiving support, concerned persons can better cope with the stress caused by addiction. Without treatment, the family illness can continue to progress. Recovery for family members can occur even if the chemically dependent person keeps using.
- Continuing Care
Counselor lead therapy groups, peer support groups, individual therapy, co-dependency education.
- Education and Consultation
Public information, counselor education and internships.
- Bookstore
Current and classic literature, tapes and other resource material on addiction and recovery.
- Powell III Association
Formed in 1975, the Powell III association is an active organization of men and women who are interested in and supportive of Powell CDC. Powell III association members support recovery-oriented events such as the annual banquet, picnic and the chemical-free New Years Eve celebration. Members also participate in the spring phonathon that raises money for the patient assistance fund. Membership is free. All patients are automatically granted membership upon completion of treatment. Anyone interested in joining the association is invited to call (515) 263-2424.
