daVinciTM Robotic Surgery System
This new technology is a major step
forward for surgeons who practice at Iowa Methodist and Blank Children’s—and for
patients and their families as well. This computer-enhanced surgical system
will allow us to improve outcomes for our patients, help our surgeons take the
next leap forward in perfecting their craft and will keep the healthcare
provided by Iowa Health - Des Moines at the leading edge of medical science.
A renewed focus on minimally invasive surgery is natural for Iowa Health - Des Moines. Iowa Methodist and Blank Children's will continue to make strategic investments to insure that our downtown campuses will continue to provide truly ‘state-of-the-art’ patient care.
The daVinciTM Surgical System allows a surgeon to use a special console with hand and foot controls to manipulate tiny robotic arms and an endoscope (a 3-D camera eye) to perform intricate surgical procedures that are beyond the current limitation of human performance. The daVinci translates the surgeon’s natural hand, wrist and finger movements at the control console into corresponding micro-movements of the instrument tips, which are positioned inside the patient through small incisions. Wide ranges of instruments are available to perform different types of procedures. Use of this equipment makes difficult minimally invasive surgery routine and makes minimally invasive procedures possible in many additional surgical specialties than previously possible.
