Methodist West Helped Cindy Deliver a Beautiful Gift
Cindy's Story: Just weeks from her due date, Cindy Smith, along with husband Geraud and children Lauren, 4, and Benjamin, 3, completed a 2,000 mile move from the central valley of California to the Des Moines metro area.
The move resulted from a new work opportunity for Geraud, and its timing meant that the Smith's would welcome their third child in unfamiliar surroundings, thousands of miles from family and the state they had called home their entire lives. With an understandable sense of apprehension on the morning of January 4, Cindy and Geraud entered the new Methodist West Medical Center for a planned Caesarean birth.
What they found at Methodist West was beyond what they could have imagined.
"It was a tremendously different experience than my previous births," Cindy says. Both Lauren and Benjamin were born in California. "The care we received was remarkable."
The Smith's welcomed new baby Jillian at 8:11 a.m., marking the first birth at the new medical center, and just the sixth birth at a Dallas County hospital in the last decade. The healthy 7-pound, 11 ounce baby girl, delivered by Dr. Enrique Bedia, set off a celebration on the maternity ward.
"It was hard to tell who was more excited - us or the staff," Cindy says with a chuckle. "There was quite the party after Jillian was born."
Cindy says she could not have asked for a better experience, especially considering the family was so far from the place they had always called home.
"Not knowing anyone else here was difficult," she says. "But the staff at Methodist West was so caring and compassionate. They truly made us feel like friends and almost like family. I still keep in touch with them."
As for the new maternity unit, Smith says it was fabulous.
"The facility is remarkable," she says. "It is not like anything I have seen before. They have taken into account any need a new family could possibly have and designed the unit to ensure those needs are met."
Smith says the staff went above and beyond to be sure the birth was a good experience.
"I knew they would be prepared with ours being the first birth at the new hospital," she says. "It's a special feeling, both for them and for us, to know we were part of something brand new."
As for the Smith family, the birth provided a positive vibe as they began the process of getting settled in their new home. While the cold winter winds have taken some getting used to, Cindy says they have already gained an appreciation for the traits commonly attributed to Iowans.
"There are so many young families and everyone has been so kind and friendly," Cindy says. "And all of that started with our first experience at Methodist West."
