The Healthy Lifestyles Program is now available to adolescents age 15 or older who would benefit from medical weight management to improve their overall health, well-being and fitness levels.
Leading health researchers have called obesity the top nutrition problem in the United States. More than half of all adults are overweight and a third are obese, according to the National Institutes of Health, and as many as 20 percent of children are obese. Meanwhile, the Surgeon General's "Report on Physical Activity and Health" found exercise and physical activity among everyone from school-age children to adults to be at an all-time low. And childhood and adolescent obesity is an increasingly important predictor of adult obesity.
The Healthy Lifestyles Program was created in 2011 by UnityPoint Clinic - Weight Loss in West Des Moines (formerly Iowa Health Weight Loss Specialists) to assist patients with a comprehensive approach to weight loss. The program is designed for anyone wanting to find effective solutions for weight management through a combination of nutrition and activity. It is different from diet, drug, or exercise-based weight loss programs.
"Our team approach focuses on education, encouragement and helping adolescents find the motivation to adopt healthy habits," said Kerri Patton, Family Nurse Practitioner with the Healthy Lifestyles Program. "Adolescent health specialists stress the importance of weight management programs designed to help adolescents set realistic and sustainable goals for themselves, which ultimately leads to improved overall health and well-being."
In the Healthy Lifestyles Program, patients meet with a nurse practitioner, registered dietitian and exercise physiologist on a regular basis to monitor weight loss progress. Objective and behavioral markers are recorded at each visit to measure patient progress and program outcomes. Weight Loss at West Des Moines health specialists will work with adolescent patients and their families to set short-term and long-term weight loss goals and develop plans for change. Care is fully coordinated with the patient's primary care physician and any other medical specialists involved in the patient's care.
