Our commitment to diabetes education & treatment
Diabetes is a significant and costly public health problem which requires innovative strategies across the entire healthcare continuum. The hospitals and physician partners of Iowa Health System have made a commitment to offer our communities strong, integrated diabetes programs. We can offer our patients state-of-the-art disease management and educational tools to improve their quality of life. We believe that people with diabetes can live healthy, productive and enjoyable lives if they work to become skilled in self-management of the disease.
The National Institutes of Health estimates that 25.8 million Americans have diabetes; half of these cases are undiagnosed. More than 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each year and the incidence will increase as our population ages.
Diabetes is a major national health concern. It is a significant cause of many health problems in people of all ages, and is a leading cause of death. And, it is an expensive disease, consuming nearly 15 percent of the nation's health care expenditures, over $174 billion annually. But, the good news is that with proper management of the disease, health risks can be significantly reduced and people with diabetes can continue to lead active and vital lives.
