Walk into any major retail store,
and the signs are clear: isles of shiny new backpacks, rows of Justin Bieber notebooks and stacks of yellow pencils just waiting to be sharpened. It can only mean one thing... summer is nearing its end.
"Rollback savings" on back-to-school essentials doesn't mean our kids are ready to trade in their summer freedom for the classroom just yet. Summer isn't over and neither is the fun. UnityPoint Health-Des Moines offers five fun activities to check off your family's to-do-list before school is back in session.
1. Do the Zoo!
Lions and tigers and rhinos. Oh my! Blank Park Zoo opened its newest exhibit, Jamaa Kwa Africa, in May. The exhibit includes two endangered black rhinoceros, an antelope species called eland, spur-thighed tortoise, ostrich, an aviary and kori bustard, the highest flying bird in the world! But before you're ready for the big safari, don't forget to pack your little explorer's bags with the proper equipment:
- Blank Park Zoo's printable scavenger hunt to guide your wild adventure
- Binoculars to view your new furry friends both near and far, big and small
- Camera to capture your family's quick journey around the world
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to "keep it cool" in the summer heat
2. Explosion of Fun!
Head on over to the Science Center of Iowa for an out-of-this-world experience! Treat your family to a day of examining the natural world around us. From planet Earth to outer space and everything in between, there is truly something for everyone to explore. Register online for the upcoming Weekend Workshop: BRRRTHDAY on Saturday, August 17th. Free with regular admission, kids will learn about famous scientists born in August and make liquid nitrogen ice cream!
3. Lucky Strike!
You're about to bowl a high score with the kiddos! Take advantage of the free, active fun waiting for you and your family through the Kids Bowl Free program. Signing up for a family pass makes your children eligible for two free games of bowling each day of summer. Local participating bowling allies include Air-Lanes, Plaza Lanes, Warrior Lanes and more. 4. Make a Splash!
Dive into the new school year with an afternoon trip to the pool! Bike over to one of the area's many public aquatic centers, including Holiday
, Valley View
. Admission grants your family access to tons of fun in the sun with water slides, lazy rivers, diving boards and more. Want to mix it up? Make it a beach day. Des Moines is home to Racoon River
, Gray's Lake
and Saylorville Lake. Pack a healthy picnic lunch, swimsuit and sunblock, and you'll be set to go!
5. Staying In?
That's OK! Summer fun doesn't have to stop at home. These DIY projects are sure to keep your little ones active in the comfort of your own backyard:
