Leo "Gene" Spalding from Pleasant Hill will be remembered by his loving family, many friends and neighbors for his dynamic personality, his passion for his family and for always making people feel special.
Following his death in May 2012, Gene's wife made the decision for him to be a donor, allowing him to positively impact other lives
Nancy received the gift of restored sight through a cornea transplant as a result of Gene's altruism. In a heartfelt letter written to Nancy by Gene's wife just a few months after he lost his epic battle with cancer, she stated, "His eyes were well used, but I'm hoping you get many years of sight, too." And in Gene's memorial, his family proudly wrote, "Even in his passing he continued to help people by donating his eyes in the hopes that they would help a fellow golfer find their ball or a wordsmith finish the crossword."
