Chopping onions almost seems like an emotional experience, as gases from the vegetable irritate the eyes, causing the majority of people to shed tears.
Eatright.org offers four ways to keep from crying when cutting an onion:
- Keep the cut side of the onion down on the cutting board to decrease the gases that are near your eyes.
- Open a window to let out some of the gases.
- Wear protective goggles.
- Light an unscented votive candle near the cutting board to help evaporate the gases.
