UnityPoint Health- Des Moines invites you to stop by their tent at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market this Saturday to meet volunteers from our Cardiovascular Services department! Staff will be on-site promoting heart health and stroke awareness, educating visitors about the importance of maintaining a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI).
In addition, parent-gardeners from Cowles Montessori will be at the UnityPoint Health tent to showcase the importance of Teaching Gardens at schools. They will be offering kids the opportunity to plant their own seeds to take home.
In partnership with the American Heart Association, UnityPoint Health - Des Moines is proud to sponsor three Teaching Gardens in Des Moines, including Cowles Montessori, The Downtown School and Carver Elementary. These Teaching Gardens become real-life learning laboratories for students to learn what it means to be healthy. The children are taught how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits.
Having good eating habits contributes to maintaining a healthy BMI. BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity, calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat.
