The Counseling Centers for Central Iowa

The Diabetes Education Center

The Diabetes Education Center provides knowledge, which is a key factor to managing diabetes. A team of healthcare professionals at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa Lutheran Hospital offer information, instruction and support to people with diabetes through educational programs and counseling sessions. The Health and Fitness Centers

The Health and Fitness Centers are located at both Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Personal equipment orientation, aerobic and muscle conditioning consultation, demonstrations of proper stretching techniques and supervision by a staff member are all benefits available to fitness center members. Hearing Health

Hearing Health is a hearing aid dispensing program at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children's Hospital that aids patients in taking steps to better hearing. UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Home Care

UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Home Care provides skilled nursing, home care aides and companions, rehabilitation therapy, hospice, palliative care, infusion therapy and home medical equipment to meet your needs. Home healthcare is an alternative for individuals of any age whose condition does not require hospitalization or admission into a care facility, but does require continuing care, treatment or instruction. UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Home Care features four Home Care Centers to give patients and their families convenient access to home health services and equipment. Located in Des Moines, Clive, Urbandale and Grinnell, these centers feature a large lineup of equipment to view and a staff that can knowledgeable and friendly. Lifeline
UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Home Care offers Lifeline, a personal home emergency response system for a small monthly fee. Whenever you need help, one press of your lightweight, waterproof help button activates the two-way voice communicator that puts you in touch with a caring Lifeline monitor who gets you the help you need. Hospice Care
UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Home Care offers Hospice Care to assist and comfort terminally ill patients and their families. It is available both in a patient's home and at Taylor House in Des Moines. A coordinated, interdisciplinary team delivers hospice care. Holistic care is provided to meet the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Taylor House Hospice offers patients and families an alternative to hospitals and nursing homes and provides patients with a "home-like" setting. The John Stoddard Cancer Center
The John Stoddard Cancer Center offers programs and support services for cancer patients, families, and friends. Support services available include support groups, individual and group counseling, one-on-one support services for people diagnosed with cancer, etc. Programs offered:

  • Day to Day - Support group for adults affected by life-threatening illnesses such as cancer. Meets twice a month. For more information, please call 241-6107.
  • Us Too - Monthly Prostate Cancer Support Group for men and women affected by prostate cancer. For more information, please call 241-8505.
  • After Breast Cancer (ABC) - Monthly Support Group for women with breast cancer. For more information, please call 241-8505.
  • Blood Cancer Support Group - Monthly Support Group for people diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma as well as their family members and friends. For more information, please call 241-8505.
  • The Buddy Program - One-to-one support service for those diagnosed with cancer. For more information, please call 241-8505.
  • What's On Your Mind? - Individual and group counseling for people with cancer. For more information, please call 241-4280.
  • Lymphedema Clinic - Comprehensive treatment program for individuals with lymphedema. For more information, please call 241-6839.
  • The Look Good, Feel Better program is designed for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatments. Wigs, turbans, make up, swimsuits and camisoles are available. This program offers a free consultation by a licensed cosmetologist who can provide tips on skin care, make up and hair care during treatments. LifeLong Links
The LifeLong Links Web site provides a place to start for consumers and providers who are thinking about and planning for long-term living. LifeLong Links also connects informed consumers and providers with a coordinated entry point to Iowa's information and referral resources: Iowa COMPASS, the Iowa Association of Area Agencies on Aging, Iowa Family Caregiver Support Program, and Iowa 2-1-1. My Nurse
My Nurse is a free health information service for the public, sponsored by UnityPoint Health and staffed by registered nurses 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. The nurses at My Nurse answer your health questions, help you find a doctor, and register you for classes and health programs. Contact My Nurse toll free at 1-800-424-3528 or send them a message at mynurse@ihs.org and receive a response (usually within 24 hours) during normal business hours Monday through Friday.

The Nutrition Centre
The Nutrition Centre offers a three class series in conjunction with the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. The focus of the services emphasize buying healthy foods, evaluating body composition and addressing the nutrition concerns of those people with high blood cholesterol levels or coronary artery disease. The Reserve on Walnut Creek

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program
The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) can help you find answers to the important questions you have about Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, longterm care insurance and other health insurance issues. Telecare
Telecare is a free program for people who live alone in the Des Moines area to have telephone contact with someone who cares. Volunteers at Iowa Lutheran Hospital provide this service. The Wound Healing Center
The Wound Healing Center provides specialized outpatient treatment for wounds that have not healed in six weeks or longer. A condition that may result in a non-healing wound includes complications from diabetes, poor circulation, pressure or friction, animal or insect bites and surgical complications.
