Preparing for Pregnancy

Having a child is one of the most wonderful and special milestones in many people's lives. UnityPoint Health - Des Moines encourages future mothers and fathers to be prepared for pregnancy. The hospital offers a variety of classes and encourages couples to strongly consider the following:

Smoking & Alcohol Abuse
Smoking and abusing alcohol is very unhealthy and makes it harder to conceive. If you do become pregnant, please remember that anything you breathe in or consume-your baby does as well. Smoking or drinking while pregnant could cause you to miscarriage. It puts your unborn child at a greater risk of developing severe health issues both during the pregnancy and throughout the rest of their lives. It is highly recommended to quit smoking before attempting to become pregnant, and to avoid or limit drinking. Once pregnant, it is best to avoid drinking altogether because no one knows exactly how much is a safe amount.

Proper Nutrition & Rest
For a child is to develop properly; the mother needs to get plenty of rest while maintaining a balanced and healthy diet. The healthier the food, the healthier the child will be. Some children experience birth defects involving their spine, and doctors have found out that a vitamin supplement and at least 400 mcgs of folic acid each day before becoming pregnant will help prevent spinal defects.

Educate Yourself!

It is better to know as much as possible about what to do before, during, and after pregnancy. UnityPoint Health - Des Moines provides classes that will help you gain a better understanding of the amazing journey you're just beginning.
