Have you heard of this new thing called a "Gender Reveal Party"? It is supposedly this new 'crave' for pregnant couples to reveal the gender of their baby. My husband, Tyler, and I decided to hop on this reveal train and try it out! Here are a few steps on how to throw a gender reveal party:
Schedule your appointment: My clinic schedules these appointments around week 20 of the pregnancy. Since I knew I wanted to throw a gender reveal party, I scheduled my appointment ahead of time to make sure I had a set date to play with.
Decide who you are going to invite: This was a tough one for us because we wanted everyone to be there! However, we have such a big family so we had to decide where we needed to cut it off. We decided to go with our parents, grandparents and close friends. That gave us around 25 guests, which was plenty to have in our tiny house!
Decide if you want to send out invitations: Now that you know the date and who you are going to invite, how are you going to let everyone know about it? Will you make phone calls, send out a fun email, or mail invitations? I found a really cute invitation on Etsy.com and mailed it out to all of my guests. Then I made sure they RSVP'd so we could get a head count for food.
Decide what you want to have at your gender reveal party: This goes for everything - food, decorations, supplies, etc. Since our reveal party was in July, we decided to go with a grill out. We bought hamburgers and brats then made sides, beverages and desserts. We tried to contain ourselves with decorations but still made it look fun!
Decide how you want your baby's gender revealed: There are many different ways to reveal your baby's gender. Here are a few:
- Go to a bakery and have them bake a cake or cupcakes with pink or blue frosting in the middle.
- Go to a baby clothing store and pick out a boy and girl outfit. Have the store clerk gift wrap the correct outfit based on the gender.
- Go to a florist and have them fill up a box of pink or blue balloons. (This is what Tyler and I decided to do)
- Go to a florist and have them fill black balloons with pink or blue confetti. Then find a fun way to pop them!
Try and prepare as much as you can ahead of time: Since I have the summer off due to my occupation, I tried to get as much done for the party as I could ahead of time. I made decorations weeks in advance, made desserts the week of and froze them, then got groceries and cleaned the house the day before. This made the big day so much easier!
Getting the news: Depending on when your appointment and reveal party are may play a role in getting the news. Tyler and I had our appointment the day before our party. We went to the appointment and had to look away while the ultrasound technician looked to see if our baby was a boy or a girl. The technician then wrote down our baby's gender on a piece of paper and put it along with the ultrasound in an envelope. Tyler and I then went to a florist and handed her the envelope and told her to fill our box with pink balloons if the envelope said girl or blue balloons if it said boy. Honestly, it was really hard to face the fact that these two women already knew what we are having before we did, but it was good to get the envelope out of our hands.
The Big Day: The next day, we hung our decorations, set up tables, prepared the food and made sure everything was in its place before we went back to the florists to pick up our box. When we got home, our guests were arriving and the party was about to start! Tyler fired up the grill, socializing began and my nerves and excitement were starting to settle in. I tried to eat as much as I could, but honestly I just wanted to be done eating so we could open our box! We then gathered everyone in our basement to play a quick baby game. Honestly, I don't know why I thought this was a good idea. It just made us wait for our reveal even longer! However, it was a lot of fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it!
Once we finished the game, my heart instantly started pounding and my hands started sweating because I knew the moment we had all been waiting for was about to happen! We gathered everyone outside around our deck and placed our box on a couple coolers so everyone could see the big reveal. Tyler and I counted to three and our lives were forever changed. We were having a girl!
The big moment went so fast but it was so special. It was a moment I will never forget and is something we will cherish forever! We couldn't be more excited and blessed!
