The Iowa Methodist Transplant Center
The Iowa Methodist Transplant Center strives to provide complete care for those with renal failure. This involves not only education about the transplant process and performing the transplant surgery, but also providing the full range of general and vascular surgery services needed for a patient to stay on dialysis and remain eligible for a kidney transplant.
For more than 25 years, the Iowa Methodist Transplant Center has performed adult and pediatric kidney transplants with a dedicated team of surgeons, nephrologists and support staff. Since this time, there have been more than 400 kidney transplants completed at Iowa Methodist.
The Transplant Center was the first in Iowa to perform a laparoscopic nephrectomy (the minimally-invasive removal of an entire kidney) for a kidney donation from a living donor, and was also the first hospital in Iowa to do a paired kidney exchange (the coordinated exchange of two live kidney donations at the same time to two recipients, providing a suitable match for each patient).
The Transplant Center's services include community education and a variety of technical and informational support services for patients and families. The center receives referrals for transplant evaluation from nephrologists, hospital dialysis units and patient self-referral.
Nearby transplant centers are backup referral centers, assuring uninterrupted care for Iowa Methodist transplant patients.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced the list of hospitals across the country receiving the National Medal of Honor for their success in increasing the number of organs available for transplantation. The 6th Annual National Learning Congress hosted by HRSA took place on November 3rd and 4th in Texas. Iowa Methodist Medical Center was again awarded a Silver Medal for a 75% conversion rate over a continuous 12 month period.
Iowa Methodist has received a Medal of Honor every year for the six years the Collaborative has been in place. Few hospitals nationwide have received the Medal of Honor more than three consecutive times.
